BRIXTON - Apparel Graphics
About
A self initiated passion project to design apparel graphics for Brixton. Brixton is a lifestyle clothing brand that draws inspiration from the timeless styles from the past. They build quality garments for all types of creators today but have a close connection to skateboarding, surfing, music, and fine arts culture. The draw to do this project comes from a recent visit to their store in Encinitas where I noticed the lettering on the Utopia’s mens jacket along with the color/swatch selection throughout the entire store. Putting it simply, the visit left me impressed and inspired.

Research
Before developing the concept, I researched the brand story and better familiarized myself with the design style and history of the brand. In my research, I discovered Design Director, Peter Stoddard, comes from a blue collar background previously working at an auto body shop. Within blue collar trades are heaps of lettering and badge ephemera that I felt would work well with the Brixton style. Brixton’s current graphic tees are more modern with highly refined digital typography. However, with a history of blue collar work and trends leaning towards nostalgia, I felt it was appropriate and differentiating to execute graphics with an approach that embraced analog methods of lettering.

Concept
I wanted the graphics to be simple, bold, and familiar but still have noticeable character with a human quality. While developing the graphics, I channeled the hands-on, get your hands dirty attitude ever so present within blue collar trades. Ideas were inspired by retro motorcycle graphics, vintage razor packaging, crate stencils, and shipping containers.
